Set Goals with your Dog in Five Steps

Do you find yourself constantly putting off your training goals with your dog? If so, you’re not alone. Procrastination is a common problem that many people struggle with, but the good news is that there are ways to overcome it, achieve your training goals and improve your productivity at the same time.

1. Set goals and create a plan for achieving your dog training and behavior goals. Break down your tasks into smaller, more manageable steps and create a schedule for when you will work on each one. By setting clear goals and deadlines for you and your dog, you can help eliminate the temptation to put things off. For example, work on sit and stay next to the front door, but first work on sit and stay in the kitchen. Break up your training into smaller, more manageable training sessions.

Tip: The best time to practice your dog’s cues is at meal time, going outside, or tossing a toy!

  1. To overcome procrastination, create a reward system for YOU, not just the dog. For example, treat yourself to a nice cup of coffee and a piece of cake after a session. By giving yourself something to look forward to, you can help motivate yourself to get your training practice in.
  2. Hold yourself accountable. Share your training goals with a friend or family member who can help keep you on track and provide encouragement when needed. Having someone else to answer to can help keep you motivated and focused on your tasks.
  3. Training your dog can also help you establish a routine and create a sense of structure in your day. By setting aside time each day to work with your pet, you can develop a habit of following through on tasks and staying committed to your goals.
