Motivation Training Tips

Crate Training Dogs

Building a strong bond and connection with your dog is one of the key elements of keeping them motivated to train and learn with you.

Dogs are incredibly intelligent and eager to please, so by nurturing this bond, you can create a positive and rewarding training experience for both of you.

Here are some tips on how to keep your dog motivated to train and learn:

  1. Positive reinforcement: Dogs respond best to positive reinforcement, so be sure to reward good behavior with treats, praise, affection and PLAY. This will encourage your dog to continue learning and trying new things.
  2. Consistency: Consistency is key when it comes to training your dog. Be sure to set clear expectations and stick to a regular training schedule. This will help your dog understand what is expected of them to make the learning process more effective.
  3. Keep training sessions short and fun: Dogs have short attention spans, so keep training sessions short and engaging. Make training fun by incorporating games, toys, and treats to keep your dog excited and motivated. End your training sessions with the dog following the steps correctly. You don’t want to end with the dog frustrated and tired. Have you ever tackled something difficult or new and when you continually make mistakes you get angry or you don’t want to play again? It’s very much the same for dogs!
  4. Use a variety of training methods: Every dog is different, so it’s important to find what works best for your dog. Experiment with different training methods, such as clicker training, shaping, and luring, to find what motivates your dog the most. Some dogs are call dogs and others prefer treats. Out Katey loves both equally! Knowing what brings your dog their greatest joy is very
important to tailoring your dogs motivation.
  5. Be patient and understanding: Training takes time and patience, so be sure to remain calm and patient with your dog. Remember that every dog learns at their own pace, so be understanding and supportive throughout the training process.
  6. Build a strong bond: The bond and connection you have with your dog is everything when it comes to training. Spend quality time with your dog, engage in activities they enjoy, and show them love and affection to strengthen your bond and make training more enjoyable for both of you.
    7. Avoid adding punishers, most especially during the learning process. If your timing is off or punishment is inconsistent you can really destroy your bond. You have to be very careful with punishment methods when it comes to animal training. You can’t really screw up positive reinforcement the way you can make mistakes when using punishments. Be very careful! We suggest completely avoiding the use of positive punishment. It’s just not necessary in most cases.

By following these tips and building a strong bond with your dog, you can keep your dog motivated to train and learn.

Remember that training is a lifelong process, so be patient, consistent, and positive in your approach. The bond and connection you have with your dog will make all the difference in their training journey!
