The First Grooming Visit: What to Expect and How to Prepare Your Dog

Dog Grooming at Wag N Tails in Shelby Township

Your dog’s first grooming appointment should feel safe, calm, and welcoming. At Wag N Tails, we treat the first visit as a learning opportunity—not a makeover. The goal is to help your dog build positive associations that last for life.

Start Slow and Gentle

On the first visit, we focus on:

  • Getting to know your dog
  • Introducing tools slowly
  • Building trust around the table
  • Pairing grooming with positive experiences

Some dogs are ready for a full groom right away. Others need a gradual approach. Both are normal.

Desensitization Makes a Big Difference

The first visit might include:

  • Touch conditioning
  • Gentle brushing
  • Soft table work
  • Ear checks
  • Nail trims (if your dog is ready)
  • Short breaks

We never force, rush, or push your dog past their comfort zone.

How to Prepare at Home

Before your dog’s grooming appointment, help your dog by:

  • Touching their paws gently
  • Brushing them for a minute or two
  • Lifting their ears and checking inside
  • Letting them smell harmless tools like a brush or towel

This builds confidence and familiarity.

Read Your Dog’s Cues

Your dog may show signs of needing slower introductions:

  • Panting
  • Pacing
  • Whining
  • Freezing
  • Leaning away

These aren’t “bad behaviors”—they’re communication. And we listen closely.
