Canine Good Citizen Program Assists with Ensuring
Safer Pets within the Community
Recent studies report that an average of 1,000 Americans per day are treated in emergency rooms as a result of dog bites. In 2010 there were 34 fatal dog attacks in the USA. Most of the victims who receive medical attention are children, half of whom are bitten in the face. It is clear to see that proper care and training for one’s dog is essential and the responsibility of every dog owner.
Launched by the American Kennel Club in 1989, the Canine Good Citizen Program is designed to prepare and train dogs to be good both in the home and within their community. For the past three years, Wag ‘N’ Tails Dog Activity Center, located in Shelby Township, has been offering the program (CGC) as a continuing education course within its training facility.
Wag ‘N’ Tails is one of Michigan’s top CGC testing sites and continues to help the community train their dogs to be Canine Good Citizens. The CGC title is a recognized title that ensures a dog has a certain level of manners in a number of situations and environments.
“The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program is geared towards rewarding well-behaved dogs and responsible owners,” said Patti DeBono, our Director of Training at Wag ‘N’ Tails.
Dogs who are a part of the CGC program undergo a 10-part evaluation in which they are tested for manners, basic obedience and temperament. In addition, at Wag ‘N’ Tails, sign a Responsible Dog Owners Pledge prior to taking the CGC Program.
AKC believes that responsible dog ownership is a key part of the CGC concept and by signing the pledge, owners agree to take care of their dog’s health needs, safety, exercise, training and quality of life. Owners also agree to show responsibility by doing things such as cleaning up after their dogs in public places and never letting dogs infringe on the rights of others.
The center also offers Kids Camps each summer to teach children dog safety and how to properly engage with their pet and other’s.
Wag ‘N’ Tails Dog Activity Center was founded by owner Christine Fox who began training dogs in 1989 by researching both dog and canine communication and studying under professional behaviorists. Through years of hands-on experience, she has now assembled a team of highly- trained professionals who care for and train each animal with precision and pride. The center offers a variety of resources including training, dog acting coaching, boarding and grooming.
The center is located at 56776 Mound Road in Shelby Township, MI For more infomration, visit Wag N’ Tails at www.wagntails.net or call 586-781-6400.

We are happy to say that we have NO AFFILIATION what so ever with Camp Wag A Tail L.L.C.
Here at Wag ‘N’ Tails Dog Activity Center we hold our staff to the highest of standards. New employees go through vigorous weeks of training before they are allowed to care for our canine guests. This includes safety certification, first aid certification, a behavior seminar, hands-on training for interacting with our guests, and strict cleaning and disinfection procedures. Once initial training is completed employees are required to go through at least two training classes: our Puppy Preschool Training Class and our Bark To The Basics Training Class. Each and every employee must follow and complete this detailed certification program offered through our school. We are proud to offer health and safety certified trainers who undergo these evaluations and training to ensure the highest quality of service for you and your pet.
Not only do we offer the highest standards of care for your pet but our prices are all-inclusive with few exceptions. While your pet is staying with us they receive group training sessions several times a day during the dogs’ playtime and exercise time. Your dog is out for a play and exercise session for a minimum of four to five hours in the morning and in the early evening as well. Our highly trained staff will administer medications (of any kind) that you provide us for a small additional fee. All medication is thoroughly tracked through our computer system as well as by a color-coded tab band that us on the dog at all times. As an additional precaution, there is a medication card placed on each dog’s housing area which contains detailed instructions for your dog’s medication.
We are proud to offer the best care for your dog along with a truly caring and friendly staff. At Wag ‘N’ Tails you will find a clean, caring and family environment for you and your dog.
